The stage is filled with squeals of delight when the award-winning Bits ‘N Pieces Puppet Theatre brings its spendiferous GIANT puppet musical, Alice in Wonderland, to Greenville on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 9:00 am and 4:00 pm in E.E. Bass Auditorium. When Alice escapes her boredom of this world to venture into a dream of another, madcap high-jinks and outlandish adventures are the order of the day as lavishly costumed characters and giant nine-foot tall puppets whirl, dance and sing on their jouney through Lewis Carroll’s mythical setting, Wonderland. Our Heroine learns it takes self-reliance and quick thinking to tame the comic nonsense of the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and Wonderland’s other unpredictable residents. Actor and master puppet builder Holli Rubin plays the title role. Puppeteers cavort in towering nine-feet tall puppets, portraying the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and other characters in this beloved tale. The high-spirited musical boasts a mix of jumbo body puppets, costumed characters, traditionall puppetry and children from the audience.

Bass Auditorium in Greenville. Throughout the ages, the world over, people have been fascinated by the magical art of puppetry. A thought, translated into “dolls” miraculously set in motion, captures our eye and our imagination. Many artists have reached such levels of achievement with their art that their creations are carried on by new generations, integrating the art form into their culture. In the performance of “Out of the Mist … a Dragon”, patrons will be given a glimpse of the beauty and creativity achieved in the art of puppetry by people from widely diverse geographical areas of the world and be presented with an awareness of the cultures that spawned them. Our story unfolds in Japan as Kumagai, a pompous samurai overlord arrives at the shrine of Benten, the goddess of good fortune, to ask for a suitable husband for his daughter, Lotus. The goddess, however sends a humble fisherman to meet the daughter. They fall in love, but because of the disparity in their stations, Yukio, the young man, feels he is unworthy. The father, outraged, changes the fisherman into a dragon. Join us as we follow Yukio on his journey to break the spell through the realization that he is worthy of the beautiful Lotus. The audience will enjoy some of the most beautiful and sophisticated puppets on stage in the US today.
